Garden Design for Entertaining: How to Create a Space for Hosting and Relaxing

Today’s gardens are expected to do far more than simply look attractive. For many homeowners, garden design for entertaining has become a priority, as outdoor spaces increasingly serve as extensions of the home. In fact, research shows that 43% of people use their gardens to entertain guests, while 77% use them as a place to […]

At Raine Garden Design, we begin every project with the simple intention of creating a garden that feels both beautiful and deeply personal. So, to have that work recognised on a national stage is something truly special. Best Spring Flowers for the Garden

Some of the best spring flowers for your garden include daffodils, tulips, crocuses, primroses, and hyacinths. They are reliable spring bloomers, thriving in the British climate. They provide crucial early nectar for bees. They return year on year when planted in well-drained soil with good light. Improving the soil, clearing debris, and planting will ensure […]

We had lots of space, some ideas about a French themed garden but limited ability to bring to life. Working with Raine, she took time to really understand what we wanted to achieve and what was important to us. Playing this back to us through a series of designs and nudging us gently to think differently, got us to a final design we could really buy into and get excited about. And the transformational results are even more fantastic – a back garden that has depth and colour and different zones to create intrigue and get you to explore, coupled with a really intriguing external structure designed to take in all of the garden. Further to this a front drive, wall and garden that has lifted the house and creates real presence. Raine and her team have been excellent to work with – Raine is very talented with a lot of experience and we learnt quickly to trust her expertise to achieve the vision. She also has very high standards of the partners and landscapers she brings in, ensuring their delivery is every bit as strong as the vision she has. We now have a garden that makes us smile every time we look out the window and thoroughly recommend using Raine. (Images credit to Forest Eyes Photography)

We moved 5 years ago to a beautiful house but inherited a small, rather basic rear garden and a drive that was a bit chaotic, neither of which we were happy with. After our first meeting with Raine, we were confident that her design would deliver a complete transformation of the rear garden. It took a few more face-to-face meetings before all was agreed but Raine’s stylish design was beyond our expectations. It incorporated 3 different zones with lots of interest and, now the transformation has been completed, has had the effect of making our rear garden appear three times the size it was before and an extension of our living space. The result suits the style of the house and meets our needs exactly. We then commissioned Raine to redesign the front drive and again she delivered another amazing transformation for us. Everyone who has seen either the drive, the rear garden or both are extremely positive about the changes. Raine is very personable. She is a very talented garden designer with amazing vision. We would whole-heatedly recommend her.

Time to politely tell all of the other garden designers you may have approached to stand down. We commissioned Raine to reimagine a large and extremely dilapidated Surrey garden into a modern zoned space with large entertaining area. What she delivered was this and then some, taking our initial thoughts to a whole new level. What was once a vast and unusable patch of scrub at the back of the house, has become our favourite part of the house attracting endless praise from guests who visit. Fantastic ideas, beautiful planting, unmatched eye for detail and craft, we can’t recommend her enough.

We can’t recommend Raine enough, we are absolutely thrilled with her garden design and can’t wait to begin work. We first approached her because we had a planning condition requirement for a landscape design and planting scheme. But whilst that’s what we needed for the council, the design and value that she brought far outweighed our expectations. The design process was fantastic and gave us the space to work out what we needed from our family garden now and in the future, these ideas were continually developed and resulted in a design that we couldn’t be happier with. We’d really encourage anyone to see the benefits of getting a professional landscape design from Raine.

Raine's knowledge of garden design and her way with people are really quite extraordinary. Our garden was unloved, lacking soul and not a space we could enjoy as a family. We love entertaining, but had always felt confined to being inside when we had guests or parties. Raine opened our eyes to the world of garden design and worked with us to design an incredible outdoor space that we are not only immensely proud of, but has changed the way we live. Raine continually challenged us to see the bigger picture and also to trust the process. She was so reassuring and drew on her experience and expertise to solve problems along the way, producing solutions that were creative and practical in equal measure. Despite this being a daunting project for us, having Raine on board made the process a pleasure. She was always there when we needed her, and we always looked forward to her visits. Watching the garden being built was truly magical and brought Raine's design to life. Her attention to detail and that of Winslade Landscapes were exemplary and really surpassed our expectations. The end result is a beautiful garden that is a seamless extension of our home. We feel very fortunate that Raine took us on this journey and would really recommend her for your landscaping project.

Raine helped us with our garden project after completing the design work in 2023. The project involved the extensive redesign of our garden, with the incorporation of a swimming pool, outdoor kitchen / dining etc and full replanting. Her input was invaluable and timely throughout the project, we are thrilled with the result. Her expertise and experience were clear to see. The relationship was very collaborative which resulted in the development of the perfect garden for us

We moved into our dream house five years ago but whilst the house was perfect, the garden was a real disappointment for me - an awkward L shape with various slopes. On Raine’s first visit, she was keen to understand our vision for the garden before suggesting any ideas of her own. She was also cognisant of my desire to do as much of the work as possible. Raine identified the need to open up the rear of our kitchen in order to integrate the new garden with our home and was keen that we do this first, even if it meant delaying the start of the garden project. Raine is direct in her communications and will challenge you but that is exactly what we needed in order to achieve our perfect garden. Raine delivered on her brief in spades - we now have a modern garden which looks and feels twice the size that it did before, and with great entertaining space. The connection of the garden with the kitchen has made all the difference, and we now have the dream garden to go with our dream home! I would not hesitate to recommend Raine, who is a joy to work with and is at the very top of her game. Thank you Raine!

We sought a garden designer who would be able to meet quite specific needs in our brief, and who could create a unique garden for us. From the first meeting, Raine proved to be that individual, listening carefully to our requirements and producing a design that met every specification. She was both amiable and approachable, and brought subtle ideas and suggestions into the design, which met the brief exactly. The different zones in the garden work very well and offer places to sit, dine, enjoy company, or simply be indolent in the Summer sunshine. Strong vertical and horizontal lines produce interesting shadows, while the planting is subtle, softening the harder structures. Raine has given us everything we asked for, and we’re extremely pleased with the result. It’s a garden that’s very different from any in the locality, and draws constant admiration from visitors. We are delighted clients.

We have just finished our garden and wanted to say how happy we were to have employed RGD to do the project from start to finish. We really enjoyed working with Raine. Although in truth we didn't actually work. She really put her heart and soul into our project and her attention to detail was incredible. She manages with great diplomacy to win you round to her ideas even though at times we thought we knew better (We didn't) To say we are thrilled with our garden would be an understatement and we could not have achieved the look or the planting without her input. I would recommend her to anybody who wants to have a beautiful garden and who appreciates true professionalism and a gritty determination to do the work properly.

We have had the pleasure of working with Raine during the last 18 months or so, during the design and construction phases of our fabulous garden project, which has just been completed. We connected with Raine instantly; she took the time to understand our vision, how we would use the garden, and the kind of family we are, not missing out the children’s and the dog’s needs with our outdoor space. With her brief she then prepared excellent plans (she has fantastic drawing skills) to put our vision on paper. There were some changes along the way, but Raine proved to be extremely flexible, responsive, open and throughout the entire process she went out of her way to ensure that we were always happy. Raine has excellent communication skills too, and there were regular updates and prompt replies to all of our queries. Raine’s attention and eye for detail is faultless and we also appreciate that she was so honest and not scared of challenging our opinions. Today we are so grateful that we listened to her expert views. We are demanding clients and I’d say sometimes probably ‘qwirky’ people, but she wasn’t fazed by it. We had so many laughs throughout the process too, and I think it’s fair to say Raine got a real insight into our family life through our many chats, not all garden related! Raine has an outstanding working relationship with the landscaping professionals that she recommended, and they too delivered everything as agreed, and more. Our fabulous new garden was worth the wait, and we are truly delighted and look forward to see our garden mature and to enjoy it for years to come.
